Quick and easy crochet mug cosy

Crochet Mug Cosy in Light Blue Chunky yarn

Who likes tea or coffee that has gone cold – nobody!

I am definitely guilty of making myself a hot drink and then getting distracted and forgetting about it, and then when I come to drink it, it’s gone cold – yuk!

So, how about a solution that is super quick and super easy to make, that can be easily adjusted to fit any mug? Sound great? Let’s make it!

NOTE: This pattern uses treble crochet stitch (UK terms) / (Double crochet US terms), if you’re not sure how to make this stitch have a look at this tutorial HERE to help you

What you’ll need:

  • Some super chunky yarn – I’m using Paintbox yarns Simple Super Chunky (one 100g ball should easily make any size mug cosy)
  • 10mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • A pair of scissors
  • Large yarn needle – for weaving in the ends

Pattern

UK Terms

Foundation row: Make the desired number of ch to fit the length of your mug, (I like to make a length of chain stitches and hold it up against the mug I’m making the cosy for, and I can see how many chain stitches are needed to fit the height of the mug), here I want 8 sts, so I’m making 8ch, then make 2 more ch (the first 3 chain will act as the first tr)

Row 1: 1tr in fourth ch from hook, 1tr in each ch to end, turn

If you want a reminder of how to make a treble crochet stitch, see my tutorial HERE

Row 2: 3ch (counts as 1tr throughout), 1tr in each st to end (remember the last tr is worked into the third ch from the beginning of row 1), turn

Row 3: 3ch, 1tr in each st to end, turn

Repeat row 3 until your piece will fit completely around your chosen mug

Making up:

  • My mug doesn’t have a handle, so I’m going to completely close the ends, however if you have a handle, close the ends in the same way but leave a gap in the middle for the handle to fit through
  • Line up the foundation row and the last row made
  • Make 1ch, then make 1dc through both layers in each st across to the end
  • If you want a reminder of how to complete a double crochet stitch you can check out my tutorial HERE
  • Fasten off and cut yarn
  • Weave in all yarn ends
  • Enjoy keeping you hot drink warm!
