How to make a Treble crochet stitch (UK terms) / Double crochet stitch (US terms)

The Treble crochet stitch (UK terms) and the Double crochet stitch (US terms) are in fact the same stitch, they are just called by different names depending on whether you are using US or UK terms.

The Treble crochet (UK) or Double (US) is a really commonly used and very useful stitch, and once you get your head around it, it’s super easy and straightforward and can be used to make items very simply and quickly!

That’s all great, but how do you make a Treble crochet / Double crochet stitch? Let’s give it a go!

For these instructions we are going to make rows of Treble (UK) / Double (US) stitches, starting with a foundation row of chain stitches..

1. Make the desired number of chain stitches (If you want 8 stitches make 8 chain), then make 2 more chain stitches – these first three chain stitches will act as the first stitch

2. Wrap the yarn around your crochet hook and insert your hook into the fourth chain stitch from your hook

3. Wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull the yarn back through the stitch, so you now have three loops on your hook

4. Wrap the yarn around the hook again and pull the yarn through the first two loops so you are left with two loops on the hook

5. Wrap the yarn around the hook once more and pull through those last two loops, and you’ve made your first Treble (UK) / Double (US) stitch! Woohoo!

6. Repeat steps 2 to 5 but insert your hook into the next chain stitch along to make the next Treble (UK) / Double (US) stitch, and then continue repeating steps 2 to 5 until you have made a Treble (UK) / Double (US) stitch in every chain stitch to the end

7. To start the next row, turn your work and start with three chain stitches, these will act as your first stitch and so you will not need to make a Treble (UK) / Double (US) stitch into the first stitch, you wrap the yarn around your hook and insert the hook into the next stitch across, repeat steps 2 to 5 again, and continue in every stitch until you reach the end of the row

8. Continue as above until you have reached the length you desire!

And that’s the Treble (UK) / Double (US) crochet stitch!

Hope that helps – let me know how you get on with this stitch, and what you are planning to make!
