So you’ve mastered some stitches in crochet (fantastic!), and want to try something a bit more tricky. Perhaps make a project with more than one colour yarn, or, make a bigger project which requires more than one ball of yarn (so you’ll need to start a new ball part way through), do not fear – it really isn’t that hard! Let’s give it a go….
There are different ways you can change to a new yarn in crochet, and the way you do it can depend on what you are making and the stitches you are using, and which is your favourite (!) but this is my favourite as it’s the most straightforward and easy, and can be used in the majority of places! Here I’m changing yarn whilst completing a double crochet (UK) / single crochet (US) stitch
1. Work up to the last stitch before you want to change the yarn, here I am making a granny square, I want to finish by joining with a double crochet (UK) / single crochet (US), into the third standing ch
2. Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull loop through (as you normally would for a double crochet (UK) / single crochet (US) – two loops on your hook)
3. Drop the old yarn (here the pink), pick up the new yarn (the purple), and yarn over with the new yarn
4. Pull the new yarn through the two loops on the hook (like you would normally do for a double crochet (UK) / single crochet (US) but with the new yarn), then pull all the yarn ends tight to secure
5. Cut the old yarn and continue working as per your pattern with the new yarn, and you’re good to go! Simple! If you want, you could weave in the ends of the old yarn here to save you weaving in lots of yarns ends when you have finished
Essentially, when changing colour (or a new yarn ball) this way, you use the new yarn for the last yarn over and pull through last loops of the stitch, pull everything tight, and carry on the new yarn.
It really is that simple! Why don’t you give it a try and let me know how you get on!
