Crochet Heart Garland – free pattern

It’s February! There is a somewhat romantic holiday coming up in this month, I’ll be completely honest, I’m not really a fan of Valentines day… but I do love crochet! Last year I created a super cute free little pattern for a crochet heart motif, and I’ve been thinking for a while – these would look super cute as a heart garland, so what else to do but create a little free pattern and tutorial on how to do this, so here we go…

CROCHET HEART GARLAND

This super cute crochet heart garland is surprisingly quick to make and it’s actually very easy, so this is a great project for beginner crocheters to have a go at.

Ready to give it a try? Let’s go!

This pattern uses Half Double crochet (US terms) / Half Treble crochet (UK terms) stitches and also Double (US terms) / Treble (UK terms) crochet stitches, for the heart motifs, follow the links for tutorials on how to make these stitches. The tutorial on how to crochet the heart motifs can be found HERE.

p.s. If you’re completely new to crochet and starting from scratch – I have a free learn to crochet guide which covers the basic stitches, you can get your free copy HERE and sign up to my mailing list!

Quick and Easy Crochet Heart Garland

You will need:

  • Red Chunky weight yarn
  • 5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle (to weave in the yarn tails at the end)
  • scissors

US and UK terms – the terms I’m using here are the same for both

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

PATTERN

  1. Using your yarn and your 5mm hook, follow the instructions to make a crochet heart following this tutorial HERE. The way we will make the hearts is exactly the same, only here we’re using slightly thicker yarn and a slightly larger hook, which will make the hearts larger and more robust for your garland.

2. Make ten crochet hearts – or as many hearts as you would like for your garland. Using chunky yarn and a 5mm hook, and following the pattern below will create a garland that is approximately 130cm long, if you would like your garland to be longer, make more hearts, if you want it shorter, make less hearts. Weave in all the ends for your hearts as you go (trust me, you’ll be thankful you didn’t leave them all to the end!)

3. Now for the fun part, putting it all together! So, start by making 6ch, and then sl st in the sixth ch from your hook (i.e. the first ch st you made), this forms the loop at one end of your garland so you can hang it.

4. Now make 15ch, this creates the space between the hanging loop and your first heart, 15 chain stitches should create a length approximately 12cm long, again if you would prefer a longer space, make more chains, and vice versa, if you would like a shorter space, make less chains.

5. Now to attach a heart motif. At the top of your heart motif, you will see where you finished with a sl st, this is the stitch we are going to work into to attach the heart – it’s in the middle of the top of the heart.

6. Insert your hook into that sl st on the heart and then make a sl st, i.e. insert your hook into the slip stitch on the heart, wrap the yarn around your hook and pull that yarn through the stitch on the heart, and then pull that same yarn through the loop on your hook – fantastic! You have now connected the heart motif to the garland cord!

7. Now to connect the other hearts! Repeat steps 5 and 6, by making 15ch and sl st into a heart motif, so each heart is 15 chain stitches apart.

8. Once the last heart motif is connected, make 15 more chain stitches for the last space, then a further 6ch, and sl st in the sixth ch from your hook to make the second hanging loop.

9. Weave in the yarn ends, for this garland, I threaded the yarn tail back through the main chain stitches of the cord.

10. Ta dah! The crochet heart garland is finished! Now to hang it somewhere you can fully enjoy and revel in your creative amazingness!!
